An experimental study of five-coordinate iron complexes containing non-innocent aminobenzenethiol based ligands
- Two dimeric iron complexes were synthesised with the ligands 1,3 propanediamide-\(\textit {N,N'}\)-bis(2-benzenethiol) \((^{1}LH_{4})\) and 1,2-ethanediamine-\(\textit {N,N'}\)-bis(3,5-di-\(\it tert\)-butyl-2-benzenethiol \((^{2}LH_{4})\). The complexes had a formula of \([Fe^{III}(^{1}L·)]_{2}\) and \([Fe^{III}(^{2}L·)]_{2}\) where \(^{1}L·\) and \(^{2}L·\) are the singly oxidised trianionic form of the ligand. Both diamagnetic complexes consisted of two iron(III) intermediate spin centres which couple antiferromagnetically to the ligand based \(\pi\) radicals and to each other. \([Fe^{III}(^{1}L··))I]\) and \([Fe^{III}(^{2}L··)I]\) were synthesised, where \(^{1}L··\) and \(^{1}L··\) represent the doubly oxidised dianionic ligand containing two \(\pi\) radicals. The metal was found to have an intermediate spin state. Reaction of the dimers with \(PR_{3}\), where R is methyl, methoxy, phenyl and phenoxy groups, gave a series of compounds of the type \([Fe^{II}(^{1}L··)(PR_{3})]\) and \([Fe^{II}(^{2}L··)(PR_{3})]\). The metal was found to have a ferrous oxidation state. These compounds showed paramagnetic shifting in the \(^{1}H\) and \(^{31}P\) NMR spectra.
