DFT studies on the structural and nanomechanical properties of thiolate-metal interfaces
- DFT calculations have been employed to study the structural and nanomechanical properties of alkanethiolate SAMs at coinage metal surfaces. We find that the adsorption of sulfur atoms and alkanethiolate molecules results in surface reconstructions. Upon applying external forces to thiolate-metal interfaces, the mechanical response scenarios are depending on the force magnitude and direction as well as the metal substrate. At Au(111) and Ag(111), lateral and normal forces induce the surface sliding and detachment, respectively. At Au(110), the peeling of the outermost Au(110) layers covered by thiolate molecules is induced by normal or tilted forces depending on the thiolate chain length. The required forces are smaller for sliding than for detachment and peeling. These findings are important for the development of many applications, especially surface modification using STM and AFM tips.
