The monastic genealogy of \(Hoḫ^{w}ärwa\) Monastery
- During the course of a study of the manuscript tradition of the Betä \(\exists\)sra'el (EthiopianJews), MS JER NLI Or. 87 came to light. This codex is a unique manuscript with several important elements contributing to the knowledge of the history of the Betä \(\exists\)sra'el. Its most important feature, by far, are two short additional notes that have been termed here the \(Hoḫ^{w}ärwa\) genealogy. This genealogy is the second piece of original pre-twentieth-century Betä \(\exists\)sra'el historiography ever discovered, alongside the \(\textit {Religious Dispute}\). Taking the manuscript as a starting point, this article is to embrace subjects such as the Betä \(\exists\)sra'el scribal tradition, aspects of its literature, monasticism, the history of the \(Hoḫ^{w}ärwa\) monastery, and the history of the manuscript itself.
