Droplet size estimation in disperse liquid-liquid stirred tank flows by turbulence scale-adaptive multiphase flow simulations coupled with population balance modeling
- Transient 3D flow simulations are performed in a baffled tank stirred by a Rushton impeller. Single-phase flow and disperse liquid-liquid multiphase flow is investigated while a particular focus is put on the estimation of the droplet size distribution (DSD) throughout the tank at different operating conditions. DSD estimations are obtained utilizing the Eulerian multifluid framework coupled with population balance modeling. Discussions focus on the effect of geometrical simulation model simplifications on the representation of the flow physics, as well as on the benefits and drawbacks of a scale-adaptive simulation (SAS) over classical statistical turbulence models in terms of the shear stress transport (SST) model. Simulation results are assessed with single-phase flow literature data in terms of power number and mean flow profiles of velocity, kinetic energy and dissipation rate, as well as with DSD measurement data.
