• In this dissertation the determinants of differences in human capital accumulation and the returns to human capital are analysed empirically. Using individual and school level data for the United Kingdom and Mexico, focus is given to the identification of the roles of migration, technological change and violent conflict in causing inequalities in human capital formation and valuation in both developed and emerging economies. The dissertation thereby fills specific gaps prevalent in the literature to date. As human capital is the most important driver for both individual welfare and economic development, the chapters of the dissertation provide insights for policy to reduce inequalities.
• In dieser Dissertation werden verschiedene Determinanten der Humankapitalbildung und die Rendite von Humankapital anhand von Personen- und Schuldaten aus dem Vereinigten Königreich und Mexiko empirisch analysiert. Es werden vor allem die Rollen von Migration, technologischem Wandel und gewalttätigen Konflikten in der Bestimmung von Ungleichheiten in der Humankapitalbildung und der Entlohnung von Personen mit unterschiedlichem Bildungshintergrund untersucht. Dadurch schließt die Dissertation Wissenslücken die bis dato in der Literatur existierten. Da Humankapital eine der wichtigsten Komponenten sowohl für die individuelle Entfaltung als auch für die ökonomische Entwicklung einer Volkswirtschaft ist, werden in den einzelnen Kapiteln Politikimplikationen zur Reduzierung von Ungleichheit aufgezeigt.
