On the improvement of security proofs

  • This thesis makes a humble attempt to bridge the well-known gap between theory and practice in cryptography, with a focus on digital signature schemes. We start from primitives that lie on one end and we move closer to the other. Firstly, we consider the widely used signature scheme, RSA-FDH. It has a loose security proof and isn't as secure as thought in practice. We show a tight proof, which meets practitioners' expectations. Our gains are in the Random Oracle Model, which is not ideal. Thus, we try to build tightly secure signatures in the standard model. These were known from a few assumptions. We show the generic framework that was used to construct them all, giving us somewhat practical, tightly secure signatures from new assumptions. Lastly, we bridge not only theory and practice, but also our first two results. Recent results prove RSA-FDH secure in the standard model, using obfuscation, but with large keys. We show a more powerful and smaller obfuscator than previously known.
