Tunnel reconnaissance by seismic full waveform inversion
- Exploration of soil properties using seismic waves is a beneficial tool for effective construction in mechanized tunneling. Seismic reconnaissance systems analyzing travel times based on seismic phase onsets are already used in various configurations. The concept of full waveform inversion (FWI) is applied to improve the exploration capabilities by analyzing the complete recorded seismograms. The software package NEXD, which solves the (visco)elastic wave equation is extended by a FWI module using the adjoint method. Numerical simulations are used to investigate the potentials of FWI on the exploration ahead of a tunnel. Synthetic measurement data are obtained from forward simulations. A laboratory experiment aiming to detect an inhomogeneity in an aluminum block is used. The investigation results show a high capability of FWI for exploration in mechanized tunneling. Different structures can be detected with a high spatial accuracy and good estimations of the wave velocity contrast.
