• Galen adaptiert Platons Lehre von drei selbsttätig strebenden Seelenteilen, einem vernünftigen Teil im Gehirn, einem mutvollen Teil im Herzen und einem begehrenden Teil in der Region der Leber. Diese Anforderung steht in einem vermeintlichen Widerspruch zu Galens fortschrittlicher, anatomischer Lehre, der zufolge das Gehirn der Ursprung jener Nerven ist, die das Vermögen zu Wahrnehmung und willentlicher Bewegung zu den Körperteilen transportieren. Da einzig der vernünftige Seelenteil im Gehirn angesiedelt ist, und direkten Zugang zu den relevanten Nervenbahnen hat, scheinen der mutvolle und der begehrende Seelenteil als Ursache willentlicher Bewegung ausgeschlossen zu sein. Durch den Nachweis diverser physiologischer Konnexionen im Organismus (i.e. Nerven, Pneuma, Blut und innere Hitze) zeigt die vorliegende Arbeit Auswege aus dem Dilemma unter besonderer Berücksichtigung und eingehender Prüfung der Vereinbarkeit Platonischer und Galenischer Psychologie und Physiologie.
• Galen adopts the Platonic doctrine of the tripartite soul within which all three parts count as psychological agents. According to both thinkers the rational part is seated in the brain, the spirited part in the heart, and the appetitive part in the region of the liver. This doctrine is supposed to contradict Galen’s advanced anatomical approach, according to which the brain is the source of those nerves that carry the power of sensation and voluntary motion to the bodily parts. Since only the rational part of the soul is located in the brain, and has access to the relevant nerves, both the spirited part and the appetitive part appear to be unable to effect voluntary motion. By exploring a diverse range of physiological connections inside the organism (i.e. nerves, pneuma, blood, innate heat) this dissertation shows ways out of this dilemma with due regard to the compatibility of Galen’s and Plato’s psychology and physiology.
