Boundary conditions on memory reconsolidation in human episodic memory

  • After reactivation, consolidated and apparently stable memories may re-enter a labile state, requiring another period of stabilization, termed reconsolidation. In this phase, memories are susceptible to modifications, providing the opportunity to alter memories. Using behavioral techniques in healthy participants, the present thesis asked (i) whether the possibility to modify memories after reactivation depends on the age of the memories, (ii) whether multiple reactivations make memories less susceptible to modifications after reactivation, (iii) whether the modification of memories depends on the intensity of new learning after reactivation. The three studies revealed that episodic memories may become sensitive to modifications after reactivation and that the possibility to alter episodic memories seems to depend on specific parameters, so called boundary conditions.
