  • A high throughput test system for Cu/ZnO catalysts used in methanol synthesis is presented. It is able to determine the catalytic activity of 49 catalyst samples simultaneously and works according to the principle of a 49-fold parallel flow tube reactor at industrial production conditions (50 bar pressure, \(270^{o}C\) temperature, synthesis gas). Model catalysts for Cu/ZnO systems consisting of supported metal copper colloids were examined and discussed. Precise preparation-activity-relationship in the precipitation conditions of (Cu,Zn)-hydroxycarbonate precursors followed by calcination was analysed by use of the high throughput system. By detailed studies with other methods (N2O reactive frontal chromatography, TPR with in-situ EXAFS) further hints on the complex determinators of the final catalytic activity were found, which are not only based on cupper surface area.
