Characterization and optimization of growth and electronic structure of organic thin films for applications in organic electronics
- In this thesis a characterization of the morphology of pentacene thin films on Au, \(SiO_{2}\), Ag, Cu, Pd & Pt has been performed. The substrate temperature, film thickness, deposition rate & time have been varied and found to influence the growth. A study of the molecular & crystallographic orientations has revealed that a pronounced 3D island growth is found macroscopically, if the molecules adapt a rather lying geometry (Siegrist phase), as found for Au/Ag. In contrast, a wetting morphology and initially layered growth is observed, if standing molecules are present (thin film/Campbell bulk phase), as found for Cu/Pd/polycrystalline metals. From the thermal stability a decreasing interaction strength in the order Pt/Pd/Cu/Ag/Au is found. While in an OFET a very heterogeneous growth is found, a pre-coating with thiol SAMs causes a homogenous growth and higher mobilities. Electronic properties are enhanced using Pd electrodes due to an enhanced morphological & electrical homogeneity.
