Surface modifications of carbon nanotubes and their application in electro-catalysis
- The surfaces of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were modified by introducing different oxygen- and nitrogen-containing functional groups, both in liquid phase and in vapor phase. These different groups were identified quantitatively using high-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The thermal stability of the different groups was studied using temperature-programmed methods and XPS. Electrochemical studies reveal that nitrogen-containing CNTs (NCNTs) have a significantly higher activity for the oxygen reduction reaction in acidic electrolyte compared to undoped CNTs. Furthermore, Pt-based catalysts were prepared with NCNTs as support and their electro-catalytic activity for the oxygen reduction and methanol oxidation reaction was studied in detail. Finally, the CNTs were organized into a macroscopic object based on carbon cloth or anodic aluminum oxide as template, to obtain an improved conductivity and a high BET surface area.
