Examination of the role of long-term synaptic plasticity at hippocampal CA3 synapses in spatial memory
- In this work we examined whether frequency facilitation, a characteristic feature of the mossy fiber - CA3 synapse, has lasting functional consequences for information processing. Adenosine A\(_{1}\) receptors contribute to frequency facilitation \(\textit {in vitro}\), thus one part of this work engages in elucidating the function of these receptors at mossy fiber - CA3 synapses. The noradrenergic system plays a crucial role in the acquisition, encoding and retrieval of spatial information. A specific focus of this study was to elucidate the role of adrenergic receptors in area CA3. The results might give an important insight into the function of arousal-mediated information processing. Besides the input from mossy fibers, area CA3 also receives associational-commissural inputs from other CA3 neurons. Both projections may relay different kinds of spatial information, and thus were subject of particular attention in this work.
