Neuromodulation of Schaeffer-collateral-CA1 synaptic plasticity and hippocampal based learning and memory

  • Hebbian learning models require that neurons are able to both strengthen and weaken their synaptic connections. Hippocampal synaptic plasticity, (LTP and LTD), have been implicated in both spatial memory formation as well as novelty acquisition. These elements combined with temporal order memory are essential for the formation of episodic memory. Hippocampal area CA1 may play a critical role in the formation of episodic memory. Neuromodulation of synaptic plasticity in CA1 may enhance the encoding of novel spatial information. This thesis explores how the dopaminergic and noradrenergic systems influence spatial and episodic memory. The first part of the research explored the relationship between D1/D5 receptor activation, Schaeffer-collateral (SC)-CA1 synaptic plasticity and spatial memory. The second part investigated how locus coeruleus (LC) stimulation affects SC-CA1 synaptic plasticity and episodic-like memory. All experiments were performed on freely-moving Wistar rats.
