Visible light-driven photooxidation of water at hybrid photoanodes

  • In this thesis, photoanodes based on TiO\(_{2}\)-polyheptazine (TiO\(_{2}\)-PH) hybrids loaded with different co-catalysts were investigated as promising materials for solar light-driven photoelectrochemical water splitting into hydrogen and oxygen. One of the significant findings of this study is that after loading with iridium (IrO\(_{x}\)), cobalt (Co-Pi, Co\(_{3}\)O\(_{4}\), NiCo\(_{2}\)O\(_{3}\), CoTiO\(_{3}\)) or nickel (Ni-Bi) oxide co-catalysts, TiO\(_{2}\)-PH photoanodes oxidize water under irradiation with visible light, as evidenced by dioxygen evolution. The second major finding is that photooxidation efficiency strongly depends on a co-catalyst loading method, as illustrated by higher activity of IrO\(_{x}\) introduced by the photodeposition method as compared to IrO\(_{x}\) deposited by colloidal deposition. The key factor is the quality of the coupling between the absorber and the co-catalyst. Finally, results of this thesis have indicated the importance of the electrolyte type and its pH for efficiency and stability of hybrid photoanodes.
