Investigations of the role of neuronal oscillations in information processing in the hippocampus
- Neuronal oscillations play an important role in information processing in the mammalian brain and are especially associated with sensory integration and processes affecting forming and recalling of memorized patterns. Synaptic plasticity in the hippocampus is a cellular mechanism that underlies memory formation. The duration of changes in synaptic strength may reflect how long a memorized pattern is retrievable by cognitive processes. In this dissertation, an in vitro approach was implemented to explore the interplay between synaptic plasticity states and neuronal oscillations (Study 1). Given the fact that long-term potentiation (LTP) fails in diseases that affect hippocampal function (Selkoe, 2001; Wiescholleck and Manahan-Vaughan, 2012), it is also explored to what extent LTP failure in a rodent models of Alzheimer’s disease (Study 2), and of psychosis (Study 3), is associated with changes in hippocampal neuronal oscillations in behaving rats.
