Mechanisms of light-induced neuronal asymmetry during embryonic development

  • Naturally-occurring asymmetrical light stimulation during embryonic development is a prerequisite for the formation of visual asymmetries within the pigeon’s tectofugal system. This thesis identifies the miR-183 cluster is a promising key player to modulate the retino-tectal connection to shape the brain into its lateralized system. While the retina itself may not be involved in this process, the expression of these miRNAs in the optic tectum is light dependent. The miR-183 cluster most likely acts to regulate activity-dependent growth processes throughout the whole optic tectum, predominantly in the superficial/intermediate layers that are contacted by retinal fibers. These line of studies give valuable insights into the potential mechanisms within the retino-tectal system, especially the optic tectum during the critical stages of asymmetry formation and provides a crucial basis for further research into the mechanisms of the ontogeny of visual lateralization.
