Exploring the mechanisms of serotonergic modulation on transcranial direct current stimulation-induced neuroplasticity in humans
- Previous studies have shown that cortical neuroplasticity can be modulated by enhancing serotonin levels using the substance citalopram. So far, little is known about the mechanistic background of the interaction between increasing serotonin levels and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS)-induced neuroplasticity in humans. Two physiological studies were conducted in healthy young adults to explore the mechanisms of serotonergic modulation via citalopram on tDCS-induced neuroplasticity. Altogether, the main effects of the acute modulation of the serotonergic system by citalopram are an increase and prolongation of tDCS-induced long-term potentiation-like plasticity effects and a switch of long-term depression to long-term potentiation-like effects. Additionally, these effects are partially drug dosage-dependent and involve the glutamatergic system. These findings encourage the conduction of further studies to boost anodal tDCS effects under serotonin enhancement.
