Variability of optimal cutpoints in clinical psychology
- Cutpoints are ubiquitous in many scientific fields but are not without weaknesses. The most common method for optimizing a cutpoint is to pick the predictor value that maximizes a chosen metric, e.g., the accuracy. However, cutpoints selected this way strongly depend on random variations in the sample. This thesis includes more robust methods for estimating optimal cutpoints, for estimating the out-of-sample performance, and software for these tasks. The first study introduces the cutpointr package for R that includes methods for empirical and more robust estimation of cutpoints. The second study is a tutorial for running massively parallel simulation studies in the cloud using R. The third study proposes cutpoints for the KIDSCREEN-10 scale. The fourth study examines how confidence intervals for cutpoints can be estimated based only on summary statistics. The fifth study is an example application of the cutpointr package on optimal cycle thresholds for COVID-19 PCR tests.
